Expect slower speed limits

Crews work to dismantle Tiger dams along Trans-Canada Highway through Abbotsford Thursday.

As the rains ease and floodwaters begin to subside in the Fraser Valley, Highway 1 is reopening between Abbotsford and Hope Thursday afternoon.

Sunday evening, crews began building Tiger Dams across the highway near Abbotsford's Cole Road, in anticipation of heavy rains in the area that fell earlier this week.

But with the worst of this week's storm behind us, crews began dismantling the temporary dams Thursday morning.

The Ministry of Transportation anticipates the stretch of Highway 1 between Abbotsford to Hope will reopen to the public by Thursday afternoon.

“Drivers should expect slower speed limits, delays and traffic pattern changes through the Bridal Falls area,” the ministry said in a press release.

While Highway 3 is open to essential travel only, there are no travel restrictions on the Trans-Canada Highway through the Fraser Valley when it reopens.

“Drivers are asked to limit travel to essential purposes only while cleanup and repairs continue,” the ministry said.

“The highway infrastructure remains vulnerable following recent storms. The ministry continues to monitor the weather and the performance of the highway. People should be aware that highways affected by severe weather could close at any time if conditions change.”

Meanwhile, Highway 99 north of Pemberton remains closed due to a landslide Wednesday evening. A full list of B.C.'s highway closures can be found on the B.C. government's website.
