Burnaby RCMP search for 'umbrella bandit'

Suspect hid under umbrella from bank security cameras during robbery.

Police are looking for a man who robbed a Burnaby bank last fall while hiding from security cameras under an umbrella.

On a sunny day on Sept. 17, just after 9 a.m., the man walked into a bank in the 3700-block of Canada Way holding an open umbrella above his head, according to Burnaby RCMP.

Security video released by police Wednesday shows the man initially struggling to get the large umbrella through the door.

Police say he approached the tellers and left with a small amount of cash – all the while strategically holding the umbrella between himself and the security cameras.

The suspect is described as a six-foot white man with a heavy build. He was last seen wearing a blue bomber jacket, dark pants and grey sunglasses with yellow tinted glass.

“This took place on a sunny day, so we’re hopeful that seeing a man holding up an umbrella will jog some people’s memory,” Cpl. Daniela Panesar said in a press release Wednesday. “If you recognize the suspect or some of the clothing in the images we’re releasing today, please contact us.”

Anyone with information that might help identify the suspect is asked to contact Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.solvecrime.ca.
