The Anvil Centre Community Art Gallery is looking for artists to submit work for New West Portraits, an exhibition that will relaunch the gallery this fall.

New Westminster artists are invited to submit work for a fall group exhibition to relaunch the Community Art Gallery at Anvil Centre.

The gallery has been closed since the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in March, and the city is now gearing up for a reopening this fall.

The exhibition New West Portraits is looking for works that “respond to the personal and collective impacts of the pandemic, as well as the resistance and change associated with the social and cultural shifts unfolding around us,” according to a call to artists.

“Portraits can reflect a range of creative expression, from representational to abstract, sharing stories of community, hope and inspiration,” the call says. “Accompanying short written statements or poetry are also welcome and encouraged.”

The exhibition will run from October to December 2020, and it will be on display during the New Westminster Culture Crawl and Culture Days.

Submissions must be sent in by Friday, Sept. 25 by email to hbennett@newwestcity.ca.

They must include artist name and contact information, two to three jpeg or PDF images of the proposed artworks, label information (artist name, artwork title, media, dimensions) and artist biography. Other text, such as a written statement, story or poem (no more than 100 words) may be included but is not required.

Proposals will be adjudicated by a peer jury. No exhibition fee is paid to selected artists.
