Help clean up this greenspace in New West this weekend

Glenbrook Ravine
Can you dig it? Volunteers of all ages are invited to visit Glenbrook Ravine this weekend to remove evasive species as part of a restoration project in the ravine.

If you’re looking to get outdoors and help the environment, this weekend’s Glenbrook Ravine enhancement initiative is in need of some helping hands.

Kyle Routledge, one of the event’s organizers, said the upcoming invasive species removal will build on the hard work of this year’s previous two events. It’s taking place on Saturday, Aug. 29 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We're really excited to be allowed to continue this great work!” he said in an email to the Record.

The project, which is working on the long-term enhancement of the Glenbrook Ravine, has included removal of invasive species, the planting of trees where invasive species have been removed and the construction of some bird and bat houses to provide habitat for wildlife.

Because of COVID-19, attendance will be limited to 50 people on site. It’s also why items provided in past years aren’t being provided this year and why volunteers are encouraged to bring their own water bottle filled with water, work gloves (if they have them), snacks, a pen (to sign a waiver if they didn’t do so prior to the event) and, if possible, tools (but organizers will have ways of sanitizing tools on site.)

“COVID-19 requirements will continue to follow our new check-in protocols (as we sign people in with appropriate physical distancing), so a bit of a slower start may be expected,” said a notice about the event. “Dedicated city staff and group leaders will be on site to ensure physical distancing is adhered to throughout the day.”

Volunteers are asked to ensure they come equipped with appropriate footwear (something with ankle support and closed toes), sunscreen, a hat and a long-sleeve shirt. The event takes place rain or shine.

Anyone planning to attend should RSVP to kyleroutledge@gmail.com. Everyone attending must sign a waiver and anyone under the age of 18 will need permission from a parent/guardian, which is found on the waiver.
