Two Burnaby MLAs have been named to John Horgan’s B.C. NDP cabinet, as the party forms its first majority government since the 2001 election reduced it to just two seats.

Raj Chouhan, MLA for Burnaby-Edmonds, meanwhile, has been nominated for the position of Speaker, a promotion from his previous position as deputy Speaker to former Independent MLA Darryl Plecas.

Anne Kang, who represents Burnaby-Deer Lake, was named minister of advanced Education, overseeing post-secondary education in the province, while Katrina Chen, MLA for Burnaby-Lougheed, maintained her position as minister of state for child care.

Kang and Chen were both first elected to the B.C. legislature in 2017, when the NDP formed government for the first time since 2001.

Kang had held a position of parliamentary secretary, covering seniors and multiculturalism, until January this year, when she was named the minister of citizens’ services.

Chen, meanwhile, held onto the same junior cabinet position she has held since she was first elected in 2017.

Janet Routledge was not assigned a cabinet position.
