Providing care for a loved family member is one of the most rewarding experiences. However, as many have learned firsthand, it can also be one of the most demanding. At New Vista Society, they understand that as a primary caregiver, time to rest and to regroup is hard to come by. “That is why we started the Cranberry Cottage Adult Day Program,” said Leslie Karmazinuk, the chief operating officer at The New Vista Society.

New Vista is Burnaby’s healthcare and housing facility for seniors. The non-profit organization provides low-income housing, senior care homes, and recreational programs that serve demographics of the community who are in need of support. Sometimes, those who need support are also the ones who are giving it. “Twenty-four-hour care can be really tough on a family when mom or grandma tries to run off into the neighbourhood,” Karmazinuk sympathized.

Cranberry Cottage’s Adult Day Program is a health-oriented, social recreation service that offers a wide range of activities to seniors with chronic health conditions, enabling them to continue to live in their community. The myriad activities offered reflect the Society’s commitment to both social and medical aspects of senior care. Varying by the day, some of the activities include structured exercise classes, music therapy, games, and getting pampered at the in-house salon and spa. Each visit also includes a medical consultation by one of New Vista’s nurses, who can offer medical advice to families.

The Society follows the philosophy that seniors are happier and healthier when they are closer to home. The Adult Day Program is the main component of that as it facilitates seniors to engage with their surroundings, continue living at home and participate in the community with friends and family. “Whether our clients see us once a week or a few times, it is clear how happy they are to come to Cranberry Cottage,” Karmazinuk explained, “their smiles say it all.”
