LETTER: Parents need to be responsible for educating their kids about face masks

Dear Editor: [On Sept.
Masks

Dear Editor:

[On Sept. 10], the first day Carson Graham Secondary was back in session, while having a coffee in a deli on Lonsdale I was casually observing a number of high school students congregating in large clusters on the street and in front of small businesses.

Clearly happy to be in each other’s company, I observed them hugging each other, shouting at each other down the street, standing in close contact with each other.

One or two walked by wearing masks. Not a mask to be seen in the large tightly clustered groups.

Suddenly it struck me that what was perfectly normal behaviour six months ago is not only abnormal in the age of COVID-19, it is reckless. As a middle-aged registered nurse working in health care, I have spent my days these past six months wearing personal protective equipment and taking a host of other measures to protect patients, co-workers and physicians as well as myself and my loved ones.

Parents must share responsibility for the actions of their offspring. Wanton disregard for the safety of the community at large, whether due to ignorance or a lack of caring, cannot be tolerated. Parents: you have a responsibility to the rest of the community to educate your children.
