Singing at community events was all the same for Richmond resident Emelia Lupynis until she performed at an event where she was touched in a way she didn’t expect.

The 13-year-old was performing at an Autism Speaks event when she met many teens her age and older who faced their challenges head on.

“I was able to see many kids and adults (who) faced these challenges with such positivity and (with) their support network,” said Lupynis, who has just finished elementary school at St. Joseph the Worker in Vancouver and will start high school at St. Patrick Regional Secondary this fall.

“I wanted to convey a message through a song as I thought it would be good for everyone no matter what their situations (are).”

With help from co-writers and producers in the U.S., Lupynis released her first single I Am Here, which focuses on inspiring people.

“No matter what (people) are going through, there is always going to be someone there to support you and be there for you,” said Lupynis, adding that it could be family, friends or organizations.

“People are looking for support during COVID-19 and my song’s message conveys just that for those looking for a good and positive message.”

She said she felt “honoured and privileged” to release her new single and share something positive with the community during this difficult time.

When Lupynis isn’t singing or recording songs, her time is spent competing in track and field, playing golf and tennis and doing Ukrainian dancing.
