The annual community sporting competitions aren’t back yet due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, but the online 50/50 raffle has returned.

The Kajaks Track and Field Club has launched an online 50/50 raffle from now until Friday, Nov. 26. With the ticket sales still ongoing online, the winner will receive 50 per cent of the final pot.

As one of the most iconic sports events for elementary school students, the B.C. Elementary Track and Field Championships — which is hosted by Kajaks — used to attract over 1,300 children across B.C. and generated revenue to keep Kajaks’s major programs running.

However, the charitable arm of Kajaks couldn’t raise funds as all activities and events have been cancelled due to the pandemic.

Therefore, they need to look into other ways to cover coaching fees and facility rental costs, said the event organizer Lanie Man, adding that the fundraising idea was inspired by Vancouver Canucks, which has been hosting raffles successfully online.

“Track and field is a great sport during these difficult times that allows you to keep physically active while staying in your lane to maintain social distancing.

“We need the community’s support to keep track and field alive in our city. We would like the community to know that they are supporting a good cause. The fundraiser helps to sustain our major programs and give extra options to stay healthy and active during COVID times,” said Man.

In addition, Kajaks is still offering training programs ranging from junior development (age 9 to 13), athlete development (14 and up) and masters (age 35+). And all those activities are held outdoors while following COVID-19 safety protocols.
