Richmond Ikea will buy back your gently used furniture this Black Friday

Ikea Richmond will celebrate Black Friday by not just selling furniture, but buying back gently used furniture in an effort to curb consumption.

Ikea Richmond will celebrate Black Friday by not just selling furniture, but buying back gently used furniture in an effort to curb consumption.

People can drop off their old furniture – not just Ikea furniture - and electronics at a contactless drop-off point in Ikea’s Richmond parking lot on Saturday, Nov. 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Customers who bring in a piece of furniture will receive a voucher for $25 off a purchase of $150 or more.

The recycling program, hosted by the not-for-profit organization HomeStart Foundation, will take back a wide range of furniture and housewares from donors and then distribute them to individuals and families in need.

"Sustainability is becoming the defining issue of our time,” said Cédric Gulbierz, Ikea Richmond’s market manager. “Our vision at Ikea has always been to create a better everyday life for the many people, which means making sustainable living easy and affordable for everyone."

He added Ikea wants to “change the conversation from mass consumption to mass circularity.”

“Initiatives like the donation drive are a win-win - we can divert good quality furniture from the landfill, while also supporting those in need within our local communities," he added.

The collected furniture will be used by families living in small spaces. Therefore, smaller sized furniture is needed, such as dressers, kitchen tables and chairs, coffee tables, computer desks, armchairs, bookshelves, and sofas (under six feet).

On Sunday, Nov. 29, Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver will accept clothing donations in Ikea Richmond’s parking lot between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donors are welcome to bring gently used clothing, accessories, bags, shoes, boots and linens.

Meanwhile, Resonator - a member of the Electronics Products Recycling Association (EPRA) - will also be collecting used electronics in the drop-off area.
