It can be hard for families with children in the autism spectrum to find places near Vancouver that are welcoming and tailored to entertaining them.

Sky Zone Trampoline Parkin Surrey is looking to change that with Sensory Nights, starting on April 4.

Every Monday night from 6 to 8 p.m., music will be lowered at the indoor trampoline park and the trampolines will be turned over to those with autism and other children with special needs.

“There’s not a lot of places where people with special needs can go and be embraced,” says Morey Chaplick, owner of Sky Zone Trampoline Park in Surrey. “We just want to give back.”

Sensory Nights is launching during Autism Awareness Month. The staff have had a training session with the Canucks Autism Network in preparation for the evening sessions.

The initiative is just one of the ways Chaplick is making Sky Zone accessible for a wide range of people. The park currently welcomes people of all ages, from toddlers on up.

“If you can walk, you can jump,” Chaplick says.

Sky Zone offers Toddler Time sessions throughout the week, so that the little ones can bounce around without the big kids, and at half the price.  There’s also a separate toddler court at all times, though regular prices are in effect any time other than Toddler Time.

There’s no charge for caregivers, and Sky Zone also has a parents’ lounge where grownups can relax while experienced court monitors ensure their children are safe.

Teenagers also have their own special night. Teens 16 yrs. or older can come out at 10 p.m. on Saturdays for SkyJam.  The evening includes 90 minutes of jump time, plus two pizza slices and a soda. SkySlam, Ultimate Dodgeball and the Foam Zone will all be available, so that teens can listen to music and bounce around the park with their friends.
