You have just been in a car accident.

Your car took the brunt of the impact, but you are still shaken up.

You don’t feel any immediate localized pain, but your body is tense.

You are worried about the damage to your car, but thankful to be walking away from the scene.

You get home and begin to settle down somewhat and feel better.

Maybe you were lucky, and are free from injury?

Think again, says Chris Kim, a registered massage therapist and clinical director at Inspine Therapy in Port Moody.

“Even if you feel fine after your accident, it is important to get a health assessment as soon as possible, as pain can develop over time. Immediate assessment can lessen the recovery time and make a treatment plan more successful,” says Kim.

Changes to ICBC’s regulations help with that as accident claimants are now pre-approved for chiropractic, massage therapy, acupuncture, physiotherapy, active rehab and clinical counselling treatments. Even if you are 100 per cent responsible for the accident, ICBC pays for your medical and rehabilitation expenses.

“You don’t have to wait for a doctor’s note or referral,” Kim says. “As soon as you have been involved in an accident, you can report your claim to get your claim number. When you get your claim number, you can see a health care professional to start treatment right away.”

Treating an injury as soon as possible can result in much quicker and more effective outcomes.

“Simply put, sooner is better, because you don’t know how musculoskeletal conditions will develop,” Kim says. Adrenaline and anxiety experienced after a motor vehicle accident can sometimes mask the injury’s discomfort.

“Don’t delay getting treatment until you start experiencing pain.”

Inspine Therapy can treat the physical side, as well as provide counselling to address any mental health issues resulting from the accident.

“I’ve seen many patients go through PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) following an accident. They may be scared to drive or even get in a car again because they are getting flashback memories of the incident,” Kim says. “Some are even reluctant to re-visit the area where the accident took place.”

Inspine Therapy is unique when it comes to offering both treatment for body and mind, all under one roof.

“Our staff work together to provide treatment tailored to the needs of each individual patient, physically and mentally,” Kim says.
