Understanding, plus confidence, equals success.

This equation best describes a novel way to progressively improve math skills for students from Grades 2 to 12 using the Mathnasium Method.

It’s one Manju Ranamuka, Centre Director of Mathnasium of Kerrisdale, and her staff of instructors have offered since opening this past spring.

“Math was my favourite subject when I was a child - I enjoyed the challenges it offered,” Ranamuka said. “But we understand there are students who don’t share that view and even think math is evil.

“It’s our goal to help change that and cater to any math needs a student has.”

Often, that negative approach stems from a student’s lack of confidence when they struggle to understand the concepts.

But once they grasp what is being taught, they can move forward with greater assurance and take on the next challenge.

Ranamuka explained that Mathnasium’s specially trained instructors teach youngsters how to understand math in an individual setting where tutors foster a caring, encouraging environment that helps kids thrive and learn.

And that begins with a unique assessment process.

“If you are a doctor you can reach a diagnosis based on the patient’s symptoms,” Ranamuka said. “Here, we have instructors who are trained to diagnose those areas where students struggle with math.

“That’s why when a child comes to our centre, the first thing we do is talk to them and their parents to find out what their situation is,” she explained. “Sometimes, it’s a child’s lack of confidence, even if they master the concepts.”

When a clear picture of the student’s situation is established, an individualized learning plan is created.

But it doesn’t stop there – Mathnasium’s instructors monitor their students’ progress to ensure they understand and retain the concepts taught.

The results are transformative as students display measurable changes in attitude, confidence, and school progress.

“When a child gains confidence in their math skills, they see that expand to other subjects in school,” Ranamuka said.

“Teaching was always an occupation that I wanted to pursue,” Ranamuka said, adding what drew her to Mathnasium was its teaching model that is successfully employed at more than 900 Mathnasium centres across the globe.
