When Bonnie Fung developed allergies and food intolerances, she looked everywhere for a cafe that could cater to her needs, but couldn’t find one, so she opened her own – Cupping 8 Cafe. Here are five ways it’s changing things up.

1. It’s completely allergy friendly

Fung began to develop allergies and intolerances a few years ago – she reacts to everything from fruit to milk – so she provides something for everyone, from dairy-free cheesecake to gluten-free cupcakes. There’s no cross-contamination –  “I’m a hygiene freak!” she says – so even people with severe allergies can order confidently. All ingredients are non-GMO and organic, and everything is home made.

2. The coffee is a cut above

Most of us see a takeaway coffee as fuel. For Fung, it’s an art. “I can’t stand most of the coffee you buy in high-street cafes – it’s too bitter and you can’t taste the beans. At my cafe you get the best cuppa, using the right beans, roasted the right way, brewed for the correct length of time,” she says. Fung’s obsession with coffee is the reason behind Cupping 8’s name – cupping is the proper term and protocol for how coffee should be tasted.

3. It caters to all cultures

Mindful of the fact that Coquitlam is a multicultural place, you can get foods from different backgrounds including Chinese, Japanese and Canadian. “We’re the first Japanese tofu cheesecake cafe in Vancouver and we offer several different flavours including mango, organic green tea and Americano,” says Fung, a trained baker. Vegetarians aren’t left out either – Cupping 8 serves dishes that go beyond standard fare, such as laksa noodles and Japanese curry.

4. It’s not just for desserts and coffee

While Cupping 8 is already known for its cheesecake, Fung is keen to tell customers about its all-day light lunch set of soup, salad, main course and coffee or tea. “Sometimes you want a little bit of everything, without too much of anything,” she says. The cafe also serves breakfasts and dinner and currently has a Happy Hour special from 2pm-5pm Tuesdays to Thursdays, where you get 10 per cent off with a minimum purchase of $5.

5. Its goal is to spread happiness

“My commitment for my business is customers first,” says Fung. “The 8 in the cafe’s name means infinity of love and happiness. Nowadays people are so sad. I want to share happiness for everybody.”

Cupping 8 Cafe is at 111-1190 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam. See Cupping8.com for opening hours. You can also find the cafe on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
