While the 17th annual Richmond Maritime Festival has been re-imagined as an online event this year, residents have the opportunity to win a real-life trip on the oldest working vessel in British Columbia waters.

The Providence is flagship of the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site, the site of daily online performances for the Maritime Festival, Richmond’s annual celebration of all things nautical. Built in 1903, the ship is a gaff rigged ketch that has spent its career as a commercial fishing vessel, coastal freighter and charter vessel.

The winners of the contest will be awarded with a three-hour sailing cruise on the Providence sailing ship, leaving from the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site in Steveston or the Vancouver Maritime Museum. The cruise will be available to one family group of up to 10 people and is subject to evolving provincial health authority COVID-19 orders and guidelines. The prize must be claimed before June 15, 2021.

Entering the contest is easy. Simply follow @FunRichmond on Instagram and find the photo of The Providence. Like the photo and tag someone you’d like to set sail with in the comments.

The contest closes Monday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. The winner will be selected at random from all eligible entries on Tuesday, Sept. 8 and tagged in the comments. The winner will have to direct message the @FunRichmond account to claim their prize.

Each year, Richmond celebrates its strong maritime heritage. While this year’s events were moved online due to COVID-19, the festivities will continue. Viewers can tune in daily online for a compilation of music, hands-on activities, storytelling, history and more from great local artists and performers.
