If you enjoy catch-and-release fishing, helping local charities, and dream of winning a large cash prize, then mark August 20 and 21, 2016 down on your calendars and head over to the Pier 73 Marina in Richmond for the Vancouver Chinook Classic.

Hosted by the marina and the Pier 73 Restaurant, the Chinook Classic combines ocean sustainability with fun—and the possibility of winning one of three cash prizes: $15,000, $7,000, or $3,000.

“This is Vancouver’s premier Chinook derby,” says Morgan Lechner, executive chef of the Pacific Gateway Hotel’s  Pier 73 Restaurant. “The fish is not to be brought onboard the boat—they need to be measured in the water to be eligible for a prize.”

In addition to raising funds for local charities, the fishing derby raises awareness of—and funds for—the Pacific Salmon Foundation.

“The Vancouver Chinook Classic also supports our Pier 73 Restaurant initiatives,” explains Chef Morgan. “It’s part of our ocean sustainability philosophy of buying fish direct from local fishermen, and highlighting pink salmon, which is the most sustainable of all fish species.”

Coming from out of town? The derby entry fee includes the option of mooring your boat at the Pier 73 Marina on either the Friday or Saturday night, or you can enjoy preferred room rates at the Pacific Gateway Hotel, home to both the marina and restaurant.

Love to fish but don’t have a boat? The Vancouver Chinook Classic has you covered there as well. Take the Grady White fully guided boat charter and enter the competition with a vessel equipped with the best fishing tackle and equipment.

After the fishing derby be sure to visit Chef Morgan and his team at the Pier 73 Restaurant for a sustainably harvested fish supper.

“We have a lot of seafood on the menu,” he says. “We pride ourselves on the fact that just about all our fish and seafood dishes are recommended as ‘ocean-friendly’ by the Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise program. We take advantage of our location on the Fraser River to offer fresh, locally caught fish on all our menus.”
