Put a whole lot of outdoor sparkle into your holiday season with a stroll around one of the Lower Mainland’s largest and most-loved, outdoor light displays at Town Centre Park.

It’s the perfect way to enjoy the glittering sights winding around the 1.2 km loop of the lake, and discover how much Coquitlam’s city centre has to offer - perhaps a latte at one of many great coffee shops to dining from a veritable world of cuisine - all within walking distance.

Started in 2011 on the southwest corner of the lake, the Lights at Lafarge grows a little each year as city parks teams add new features, such as more archways glowing with festive bulbs, or free-standing “picture frames” you can pose in front of for that perfect selfie backdrop.

“The display has become a much anticipated event for visitors each year,” says Eric Kalnins, the City of Coquitlam’s tourism manager.

On Nov. 30, the lights were switched on and will remain lit during the evenings, right up to 11 p.m., until the third week in January.

On New Year’s Eve, it will be sparkling until after midnight, making it an ideal place to ring in 2020.

Plus, Lafarge Lake’s location, right in the heart of the city at Town Centre Park (1299 Pinetree Way), makes a trip to see the holiday lights a complete evening adventure.

You can grab a bite from an on-site food truck, enjoy some entertainment on your stroll, and then partake of what the city centre has to offer just minutes away by foot.

“Have a coffee, find a great new restaurant or go to Coquitlam Centre to finish up some last-minute shopping,” Kalnins says. “There’s so much to do around one of the most picturesque, outdoor light shows anywhere.”

You can also combine your visit with the numerous events going on during December - everything from Christmas craft fairs and a traditional performance of The Nutcracker to a Coquitlam Express hockey game and New Year’s Eve beach party.

Midweek is the best time to visit if you want to avoid the crowds at the lake.

If you need to get there by car, plenty of adjacent parking is available.

Public transit, via SkyTrain, offers convenient access thanks to three stops in the city centre area, with the terminus at Lafarge Lake-Douglas, which is steps away from the light display.
