There are plenty of diet plans promising fast weight loss. But the results are usually impossible to sustain and the methods can be incredibly unhealthy.

The key to weight loss is starting with a small, manageable goal, according to Sam Noh, owner of Eagle Ridge Fitness in Port Moody.

Noh helps his clients take on doable tasks, such as losing 10 pounds. But first he makes sure the client is up for a lifestyle change rather than a quick fix.

There are four steps to successfully losing 10 pounds, according to Noh.

1.     Commit to exercise. Only you know how much exercise you can work into your schedule. Don’t declare you’re going to work out for an hour every day if that isn’t feasible in the long run. If you can find time three days a week, then commit to three days a week, Noh says.

2.     Clean out the fridge.Doing all the exercise in the world won’t help if you don’t modify your eating. Set aside time to plan your meals, and organize your kitchen so making healthier food isn’t a struggle. Most importantly, clear out the junk food – the chocolate stashed in the vegetable crisper is not going to become less appealing in the future!

3.     Be realistic. Lots of people want to lose weight. They feel fat or tired or fed up, and they just want to be done with feeling that way. But you can’t just drop 30 pounds in 10 days, and shouldn’t even if you could. You need to set healthy, achievable goals. Noh tells his clients to focus on losing the first five pounds, for example, and build from there.

4.     Set the pace. You know what you can handle. For some people, they can set a goal of losing 20 pounds in a certain amount of time, and they can stick to that and achieve it. For others, it takes building up to that with smaller goals – not eating takeout this month, for example – and it can take longer. Make sure your pace is right for you, so you don’t get discouraged.
