Sophia Valcamp got hands-on demonstrations of the workings of Delta’s fire department on Friday as Chief-For-A-Day. Valcamp, 10, was selected as this year’s chief after winning a contest which had hundreds of entries received from Delta schools. The jam-packed day began with Valcamp picked up at her school in a fire truck and taken to a local fire hall where the duty crew gave her a presentation. She also met Mayor Lois Jackson who took her to breakfast. Valcamp also got to check out other fire halls for other interesting demonstrations and then off to lunch. The day's activities included checking out Fire Hall No. 1 in Ladner, where she met Fire Chief Paul Scholfield and tried out the high ladder apparatus. While Valcamp was at the Ladner fire hall, a truck had to be dispatched for a routine call for a smell of gas at city hall. Delta fire has been putting on the Chief-For-A-Day contest since 1985.
