Delta throwback: Welcoming Safeway

Let’s do a throwback and check out this 1970 photo of the new Safeway store in the Town Centre Shopping Centre in Tsawwassen.

Five years ago, new parent company Sobeys sold the Tsawwassen Safeway to the Overwaitea Food Group following a Competition Bureau ruling regarding Sobeys' previous acquisition of Canada Safeway.

Meanwhile, this year Sobeys announced the locations of its first 10 FreshCo locations in B.C., including the conversion of the Safeway store in Ladner. The store closed this summer and is to reopen in December under the new brand.

Sobeys, which is owned by Empire Company Ltd., owns or franchises several grocery chains, including Thrifty Foods, IGA, Price Chopper, FreshCo and Foodland.

Delta’s last remaining Safeway is the store at 64th Avenue at Scott Road in North Delta. Empire isn’t saying if it will also eventually convert.
