Who doesn’t love sunflowers? They are fun to watch as they grow taller and bigger, they’re beautiful to look at, and they are wonderful for pollinators!

This summer, Earthwise challenged home gardeners of all ages to get their hands dirty and grow the biggest and boldest sunflowers possible.

Prizes were awarded in two categories: kids, and kids at heart.

The young farmers were challenged to grow the tallest plant, the biggest flower, and the sunniest sunflower. For the young at heart, prizes were awarded for the showiest sunflower, the best for small spaces, and the most popular with pollinators.

All summer long, Earthwise received pictures of stunning sunflowers in all shapes, sizes, and colours, which made choosing a winner a challenge in itself!

As difficult as it was, the winners have now been decided.

In the kids’ category, the prize for the tallest plant went to Maddie, age 7. Prize for the biggest flower was awarded to siblings William,6, Sophia,8, and Henry, 2. The prize for the sunniest sunflower went to Aurora, age 3, who grew a beautiful little sunflower that was perfectly yellow like the sun. The kids received special gift prize bags, generously provided by West Coast Seeds.

For the adults, the honour for the showiest sunflower went to Michal and Yasmin Sirton, the prize for best small spaces sunflower went to Barbara Hoffman for her picturesque balcony bloom, and the sunflower that was most popular with pollinators was awarded to Lorraine Yates.

Earthwise congratulates all the winners, and thanks everyone who participated and took the time to send in their photographs. To view pictures of all the winning flowers, and many of the other entries, please visit the Earthwise Society Facebook page.
