A Tsawwassen mom who's hoping life can be a little easier for those at the Tekera Resource Centre in Uganda says there's still a ways to go in terms of fundraising for a new vehicle, an effort begun last year.
Brenda Casey said the resource centre's current 1992 pick-up has 1.5 million kilometres on it and costs the centre up to $3,000 a year in repairs - a large chunk of the very precious income acquired from the sales of the cooperative farm at the centre. A Toyota twin-cabin pick-up, 2005 or newer, is what is being sought.
"More than a few dozen letters and proposals have been written, and we have managed to acquire about 40 per cent of the money from the very generous Tsawwassen Rotary," said Casey in an e-mail to the Optimist. "However, we must raise the remainder by next February in order to be eligible for the Rotary grant, choose and acquire the vehicle, and have it on the property by spring."
There's still about $8,000 to $10,000 left to raise, she said.
Her daughter Jessica is the director of the centre, a non-governmental organization made up of the cooperative farm, a primary school, a clinic and a women's craft collective.
