Are you a gardening enthusiast who is curious about how you can start saving seeds from plants that are specially adapted to your own garden?

This Saturday July 13, Earthwise is hosting a seed saving workshop in the beautiful Earthwise Garden in Boundary Bay that will help cure this curiosity.

Seed saving is a growing practice that encourages the saving of seeds from the best-performing vegetables, fruits, and flowers. Seed saving not only helps gardeners and farmers plant their favorite crops and flowers year after year, it is also an important practice that maintains the genetic diversity of plants available to future generations.

Join Earthwise Society’s seed saving expert Ryan Thummel who will demonstrate how to harvest and preserve the seeds from your garden for planting next year.

Thummel is a University of Washington graduate in plant biology where he worked on a traditional breeding project, with a focus on tomatoes, peppers, and squash for more than five years. He started his project on the UW student farm and has continued the project since moving to the Vancouver area.

“Saving seeds helps gardeners develop varieties that grow better in our northwest climate since they are adapted to our local growing conditions,” he notes.

The workshop will cover all the seed saving basics. Find out what kinds of seeds are the best to save in urban and home gardens with limited space. Learn how seeds can easily be saved from many unique heirloom varieties with interesting colours and flavours that are nice to preserve. This workshop will focus on beginner-friendly crops, including squash, tomatoes, peas, beans, and lettuce. A simple how-to pamphlet will also be provided to assist gardeners looking to start their own seed saving journeys at home.

Start saving your own seeds this year. Save money, preserve some heirloom varieties, and maybe even share your seeds with friends and family.

All experience levels are welcome. The workshop runs from 10 to 11 a.m.
