A fundraising concert is set for Saturday night at the Tsawwassen Legion to benefit local rock icon Jerry Doucette.

The event is being put on to help with Doucette’s medical expenses, according to Dave McIlroy, one of the organizers.

The Juno Award-winning Doucette suffered a broken arm and three fractured vertebrae from a fall last October and has been in hospital since November after it was discovered he had a serious heart condition. The hope is he will return home soon but will require around the clock supervision.

Doucette is a platinum-selling artist best known for the late 1970s hit Mama Let Him Play. He received the inaugural Mentor of the Arts Award, an honour handed out at the annual Tsawwassen Sun Festival.

McIlroy says Doucette is a brilliant guitarist who’s admired by fans and loved by fellow musicians.

“When you play with Jerry, you raise your game, he brings it out in you. Jerry makes every other player around him better,” he says.

McIlroy says a side many fans don’t see is that Doucette is a family man and loyal friend.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with music beginning at 7 p.m. Cover is by donation.

The Tsawwassen Legion is located at 22-1835-56th St.
