Local students got an up-close and handson experience with the environment during last week's Stepping into Nature Festival.

The four-day education festival gave both elementary and high school students an opportunity to connect with their natural environment, practice leadership and to learn about the environment through interactive activities, explained Burns Bog Conservation Society communications coordinator Aliyah Khan.

The society's website noted the festival was made up of 10 stations, led by South Delta Secondary Strive Program students, within the Delta Nature Reserve and along Lower Cougar Creek with handson activities that link curriculum outcomes to outdoor education.

Khan said one station saw students test water quality while another had them looking at bugs in a creek to determine if the creek is healthy.
