Memorial Park will be the place to be this weekend as Ladner Pioneer May Days returns for another year of fun and excitement.

The historic annual fair, which dates all the way back to 1896, has festivities beginning Friday evening and carrying on throughout Saturday and Sunday.

This year’s theme is Delta’s 140th birthday.

“Your will see this year’s theme of a birthday really in the parade with all the floats decorated for a birthday,” said May Days spokesperson Jennifer Scott. “That will certainly be fun to watch.”

The parade starts on Sunday at noon in Ladner Village and will make its way to Memorial Park.

May Days kicks off on Friday at 4 p.m. when the West Coast Amusements midway opens. The rides and games will run until 10 p.m.

The Ladner May Days Invitational Fast-pitch tournament also begins on Friday with its first game at 7 p.m.

Activities really get going on Saturday, running from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. In addition to the midway and fast-pitch tournament continuing, there will be a May Days Market, stage entertainment, petting zoo and pony rides, paddle boats, gold panning with Yukon Dan, beer garden, food trucks and more.

Sunday’s lineup, which runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., will include many of the same activities as Saturday, but is highlighted by the parade and, for the first time, the Crowning of the 2019 Royal Court.

“This year the event is open to boys and girls, so we could be crowning a king and queen,” said Scott. “This year it is not just the traditional May Day Queen, so we are calling it the Royal Court.”

Scott said she is very excited by what’s in store for the weekend.

“There is something for everyone in the family,” she said. “I can’t thank our volunteers, sponsors and, of course, the City of Delta enough. There is no way we could pull off this event without their support. It’s shaping up to be a fun weekend.”
