Stephen Robb will perform a clarinet recital titled Urban and Pastoral as part of Ladner United Church’s Sunday@3! concert series.

Stephen Robb will be playing an afternoon of music at the Ladner United Church’s Sunday@3! concert series.

He’ll be presenting a program of clarinet pieces, some of which he hasn’t performed live before. One of those will be Steve Reich’s minimalist 1985 solo work New York Counterpoint.

“I thought it was the coolest thing I’d ever heard at the time,” says Robb.

The piece required a lot of preparation work as Robb pre-recorded 10 tracks and will play the 11th role live. He’s planning to save the song for the show’s finale.

Robb, who’s been the music director at the Delta Community Music School for nearly two decades, is also planning on showing photos up on a screen during the concert. For the New York Counterpoint piece he’ll have photographs of scenery from the Big Apple, including some of his own from a recent trip.

“I think it will be fun for the audience,” he says.

Robb notes The Shepherd on the Rock, composed by Franz Schubert, is also on the set list.

“It’s a powerhouse work for soprano and for the clarinet. It’s like a showpiece for both,” he says.

He will be joined by soprano Sinéad White and pianists Bernard Duerksen and Bryn Wiley for the concert.

Work from artist Marilyn Atkey will be also be on display during the show.

The concert is set for Sunday, Feb. 25 at 3 p.m. at Ladner United Church, 4960-48th Ave. Admission is $10 at the door.
