James Plante and Claire Bidulka have roles in the Delta Youth Theatre production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

Delta Youth Theatre is bringing some Disney magic to the Genesis Theatre stage next week with Beauty and the Beast Jr.

This could be one of the group’s best shows yet in terms of production value, says director, set designer and sound designer Tony Barton.

He says the scenic sets have surpassed what he envisioned.

“As far as hours go, I wouldn’t even want to guess how many I’ve done on this one,” says Barton, who’s quick to add he’s had lots of great help.

The story revolves around Belle, a young woman in a small town, and the Beast, who is actually a young prince trapped under a spell.

The production will have all of the classic costumes, including Belle’s iconic yellow dress. Barton says he and his wife found the dress that will be used in the upcoming show in a thrift store a number of years ago.

“There’s going to be a lot of happy little girls when they see Belle come out in that dress,” he says.

As was the case with Delta Youth Theatre’s recent production of Annie Jr., Beauty and the Beast Jr. will feature four different casts.

“It’s a quality show all the way through,” says Barton.

Claire Bidulka, 15, plays Belle, a favourite character of hers from the animated Disney movie. She says each cast is working extremely hard “to put it all together.”

The show, based on the original Broadway version and the classic Disney film, features music by Alan Menken with lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice.

The play runs from April 25 to 29 at Genesis Theatre, 5005-45th Ave., Ladner.
