The Vancouver Academy of Music celebrates its 50th anniversary season with a special concert this Sunday featuring a soprano soloist now living in Ladner.

Joslin Romphf Dennis holds a bachelor of music in voice and a master of music in opera from the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.

She has performed around the world, winning numerous awards and honours, and has been on the faculty with the Vancouver Academy of Music since 2015.

Dennis has begun adjudicating at B.C. music festivals as well as serving as a judge for the Juno Awards. She moved with her husband from Montreal in 2015 when she took the job with VAM.

“I love Ladner. What a wonderful community,” she shared with the Optimist. “We have family in Victoria and when the job became available we started looking at housing and some suggested Ladner. I only knew it before driving down Highway 17 on the way to the ferry and Victoria.”

Sunday’s concert will honour the genius of Ludwig van Beethoven with Resounding Joy: Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

Under the baton of conductor emeritus Leslie Dala, more than 100 students from the Vancouver Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra, four esteemed vocal soloists, Vancouver Bach Choir, and members of the academy’s choral program will perform a dazzling concert featuring Beethoven’s most revered works. The program order will see Fidelio Overture open the concert, followed by Piano Concerto No. 4, and will conclude with a jubilant performance of Symphony No. 9.

“I’m very familiar with the work, performed it several times,” said Dennis. “I love VAM. It’s a wonderful faculty and a great school. Our voice facility is really collegial and we all work very well together.

“I’m very lucky to find a group of people who are wonderful and have the same educational goals that they have for their students and that I have for my students. It’s helping me to become a better teacher as well affords the opportunity to perform and participate.

Tickets for the Sunday, March 1 concert at 2 p.m. at the Orpheum Theatreare $10, available at: eventbrite.ca.
