There is a contingent of South Deltans involved in bringing Metro Theatre’s production of Shakespeare in Hollywood to the stage.
Ladner’s Catherine Morrison is directing the funny farce/fantasy and Les Erskine, another Ladner resident, is the lighting and set designer. Tsawwassen’s Erica Bearss plays the role of Lydia.
“I’m absolutely loving it. It’s one of the funnest roles and the best roles I’ve ever played. She’s dynamic, she’s smart, she’s fun,” says Bearss.
The play, which runs until May 12, is set in 1934 Hollywood at the Warner Brothers film studio and Lydia is the starlet girlfriend of Jack Warner.
Bearss, who has previous experience acting at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre with the Sidekick Players Club, says one of her past directors gave her a heads up about this role.
Bearss, who has a 16-month-old baby, says after discussions with family members she decided to go for it.
“It’s been a really supportive experience for me,” she says.
Bearss says the script is hilarious, there are lots of dynamic characters and the play has a good flow to it.
“It’s basically Shakespeare meets Hollywood, which even the concept itself is very interesting.”
Many of the characters, including Jack Warner, Jimmy Cagney, Dick Powell, Joe E. Brown, are based on the real people, notes Morrison. She adds the set is beautiful as well as the lighting.
Shakespeare in Hollywood runs until May 12 at Metro Theatre, 1370 SW Marine Dr., Vancouver. Performances are Thursday to Saturday at 8 p.m. with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.
