Police use sugar cubes to lure Metro Vancouver llama home (VIDEO)

"The llama was cooperative and did not spit or in any other way assault a police officer."

A loose llama caused some drama on a major Metro Vancouver highway this morning.

The animal was spotted on the east side of Highway 99 near 8th Avenue, Surrey RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Vanessa Munn told Vancouver Is Awesome.

While it was originally reported that an alpaca was on the loose, the owner confirmed that the animal is actually a llama, said Munn.

To capture it, the officers and the llama’s owners circled it and guided it back through the hole in the fence where it escaped. The owners have since repaired the hole.

Munn says they were able to lure the animal back in with sugar cubes.

The officers on the scene said "the llama was cooperative and did not spit or in any other way assault a police officer," added Munn.

It's not the first time there's been a llama on the loose.

"They've visited our yard once a couple of years ago," says neighbour Ryan Sullivan, with a laugh.

Surrey RCMP cannot disclose the name of the farm but note that it has one field with six llamas on it.
