A Vancouver Police Department constable has been charged with assault in connection with an on-duty incident on March 20, 2021, the BC Prosecution Service announced via a statement Friday.

Const. Riley Emerson Robert Wiens faces one count of assault contrary to Section 266 of the Criminal Code and will have his first appearance at Vancouver provincial court on Aug. 15.

The department has not issued a statement on the allegations. It’s unclear what Wiens is specifically accused of and where the incident occurred. Nor is it clear if Wiens is suspended and if so whether he is being paid.
