Delta Firefighters will be pedaling for charity this weekend.

On Sunday, 14 members of the department will be cycling 100 km on their stationary bikes, independently but as a group effort, to raise money for the Delta Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society (DFFCS). Donations can be made through a campaign website that was launched last week and has already seen donations come in of more than $3,000.

Delta Fire captain Reid Martin came up with the ride idea in what has been a challenging 13 months for the DFFCS, working its fundraising efforts around the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The pandemic has been challenging in a number of ways for us as First Responders. Participating in this charity ride allows our members to give back to the community while at the same time bond in an event that is COVID friendly,” said Martin. “The idea to create this Virtual Charity ride originated from a group discussion by our crew at Delta Fire Hall number four. The most challenging side of riding the 100 km will be the mental side. It will be approximately three to four hours of riding on a stationary bike which feels long especially at around the two-hour mark.”

Each rider has a photo posted on the website so people can 'sponsor a rider' or simply donate to the event.
