Fall is the perfect season to spend time outdoors. The mornings are cool and crisp, afternoons are warm and sunny, and the gardens are bursting with bold displays of fall colors.

As the temperatures are cooling down, Earthwise has been busy planning their fall Learn in the Garden series as a continuation of their popular summer education programs. This engaging workshop series will explore a variety of topics geared at new and seasoned gardeners alike.

The series kicks off with a Hot Composting workshop on Sept. 25 from 1 to 2 p.m.

This work and learn program, held at the Earthwise Farm, will teach you all about the process of hot composting. Learn about the benefits of this method and why it allows for faster production of larger amounts of nutrient-rich compost. Come ready to get your hands dirty.

If you are curious about how you can start saving seeds from your garden this year, join the Earthwise experts on Oct. 2 from 1 to 2 p.m. to learn how to save the seeds from your best performing fruits and vegetables. Save some money, preserve some unique heirloom varieties, and share your seeds with your family and friends.

For those who love to get creative, you won’t want to miss the third workshop, held on Oct. 6 from 11 a.m. to noon. Participants will dive into the autumn season with some fun fall trivia, and make their own beautiful fall table centerpiece right in time for Thanksgiving.

Centrepieces will use a “pumpkin” vase and fresh fall flowers harvested right from the Earthwise Garden. The cost of this workshop is $15 per person to cover the cost of supplies. Space for this workshop is limited, so register early!

Fall is a critical time for our local pollinators, and it's important to know how to keep them fed over the cooler months. In the final workshop, participants will explore the Earthwise Garden for inspiration and learn what they can do in their own gardens over the fall to create a colourful landscape that will attract and feed beneficial pollinators. The Fall Pollinator workshop will be held on Oct. 14 from 1 to 2 p.m.

Registration is required to attend these workshops. Unless otherwise indicated, workshops are by donation. To register, and for more information, please email info@earthwisesociety.bc.ca.
