Food Skills for Seniors is coming to Ladner

Six-week course hosted by Ladner United Church teaches healthy eating in fun environment

Whether you're young or old, it pays to eat healthy.

Food intake usually declines as one ages and it may become increasingly important for seniors to ensure that what they do eat is nutritious. Sweets and other "empty calorie" foods, which provide little in the way of nutrition, are best to be limited.

There are many benefits for seniors to eat healthy, some of which include increased and enhanced cognitive and physical functionality, higher energy levels, higher immune system, faster recuperation and better management of many chronic conditions and illnesses. A balanced diet and physical activity contribute to a higher quality of life and enhanced independence.

For the first time, Food Skills for Seniors, a sixsession healthy cooking program that aims to teach and encourage healthy eating in a fun and relaxed environment, is being offered to seniors. This initiative is coordinated by the Canadian Diabetes Association and will be hosted by Ladner United Church.

"There are many seniors that live in the community that can benefit from this program and apply it to improve their overall health," said Agnes Bauer, chairperson of the Parish Health Ministry at Ladner United Church.

During the three-hour sessions, participants will learn how to get in the habit of eating well by learning strategies such as reducing sodium intake in their food, enjoying good fats, fibering up, looking for hidden sugars, food safety, food storage and cooking smart with a smaller budget.

"Information on local programs will also be shared to help reduce the barriers seniors face when making healthy choices," said Sepia Sharma, community facilitator for the program.

In addition, Sharma emphasizes the importance of purchasing local, unprocessed food and preparing meals at home to stay healthier on a smaller budget.

The program starts Feb. 23 and will be held on six consecutive Thursdays from 9: 30 a.m. to 12: 30 p.m.

Space is limited. For registration or more information, contact Bauer at 6049400548 or Sharma at 6045075445.
