Hawthorne Elementary students, staff and parents have raised more than $30,000 in the hopes of getting a new playground.

Events included a walk-a-thon in May 2010 that raised close to $13,000 and the Hawthorne Spring Fair this May that raised nearly $19,000. The success of both functions was made possible with help from community merchants and partners, and school district staff who donated time, money, products and resources.

The school serves roughly 430 students but the fields and playground equipment also get used by sports teams, camps and others from the community.

The school's playground co-ordinator is working with district staff to complete and submit the paperwork and proposal for a new playground. The school hopes to see all the hard work come to fruition in the near future.
