Students got down and dirty at Hawthorne Elementary last week.

Four students from Mr. Bourgeois' Grade 7 class were invited on a treasure hunt ... for potatoes.

Shovels were abandoned in favour of bare hands to dig through the soil, ensuring the potatoes would be unearthed whole and undamaged.

The students became so involved that at times the dirt flew amidst loud shouts of: "I've got one!"

The harvest completes a cycle that began last May with Mr. Bourgeois' Grade 7s and their Grade 2 buddies from Ms. Bohmert's class planting potatoes.

Mr. McKinnon's Grade 11/12 woodwork class at Delta Secondary built the garden boxes and the connection with the Ladner high school continued when the harvested potatoes were sent to the DSS culinary department.
