Second annual Delta Photo Inspirations set for April 20 & 21

Delta Photo Inspirations is back for round two.

The second annual event, presented by the Delta Photo Club, is set for April 20 and 21 in Tsawwassen.

"Last year's was excellent. We did evaluations at the end of the event and we had tons of positive feedback," says Rhoda Brooks, one of the co-chairs.

Like last time, Delta Photo Inspirations will feature a juried exhibition, a vendor trade show, seminars from guest speakers and a keynote speaker.

"We had the basic format for the event and the competition down so it was just a matter of changing one of the categories for the competition and finding the new speakers," says Brooks.

The juried exhibit was open to all Lower Mainland photographers and over 100 photos were submitted. About three-quarters of the pictures will be on display.

"What we love about our club and this competition, and the event, is that it's for photographers of all levels. So from the enthusiast to the professional, there will be something that appeals to everyone," she says.

Vancouver's Rebecca Blissett, a regular concert photographer for the Georgia Straight, will be the keynote speaker this year.

"She's not so much a 'club' speaker," says Sharon Wright, another co-chair.

"We're hoping she'll appeal to some of the younger photographers that might come out."

"Rebecca's work as a live music and band portrait photographer has made her one of the most regarded in the business," the event's website notes, adding that Blissett contributes on a regular basis to Spin, URB, the National Post and the Globe and Mail in addition to a client list that includes Live Nation, Nike, People Magazine and various record labels and local artists.

Blissett will cover a pair of elements during her presentation, Brooks notes.

"She's going to talk about two things: how to get a shot on the fly in a concert scenario when you're dealing with a whole bunch of elements and you can't dictate what is actually happening. And she'll address her controlled environment, her creative construction of portraits."

Seminars at Delta Photo Inspirations will include "Macro Photography, New Worlds to Explore" with Kaj R. Svensson, "Lighting the Portrait" with Aura McKay, "Creating Dynamic Images" with Gary Hamburg and "Photoshop for the Rookie and the Enthusiast" with Sheena Wilkie. "

Delta Photo Inspirations runs Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21 at the Tsawwassen Alliance Church, 4951-12th Ave.

The juried print exhibit is scheduled for Friday and will include a dessert reception, live music and an awards presentation. It runs from 7 to 9 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Saturday includes seminars, trade show and the keynote speaker. There is an inclusive day package for Saturday at $55. To attend the keynote session only costs $20.
