KidSport marks a year of getting kids in the game

On behalf of the provincial government, Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington presented KidSport Delta with a $1,000 cheque last week to be used to support the participation in sport by children in Delta.

KidSport Delta chair Carlene Lewall said the organization is appreciative of the support from the province and from all those who have assisted over the past year. The chapter, which was founded last spring, has been able to introduce over 80 children to sport thanks to more than $20,000 being raised locally.

"In the past KidSport BC has assisted with $20,000 in a calendar year," said Lewall. "As our own chapter we are able to raise money in Delta for the kids in Delta. Within these 12 months we have equalled this amount, which shows us the need that we have here in Delta.

"I am pleased and amazed at the generous contributions that have come from our Delta businesses, individuals and the fundraising events who have directed their donations to KidSport Delta."

Sport Canada is now saying only nine per cent of children in Canada are getting the recommended 90 minutes of activity per day.

KidSport, the charitable arm of Sport BC, provides grants to financially disadvantaged children to cover the costs of sport registration fees. KidSport grants are available for children 18 years and under who are in financial need to pay registration fees for the sport of their choice.
