Legion hosts 'Musicfest'

It has become a mission at the Tsawwassen Legion to become a location for live music featuring both new and established local musicians.

The local music community has responded with enthusiasm as demonstrated by last weekend's Deltassist Toy Depot benefit show organized by Jerry Doucette and Kenny Boychuk.

Many volunteers helped make the Saturday night show at the Legion a success.

Tsawwassen Legion entertainment chairperson Terry Nylander has been on a mission to complete an entire sound system - from microphones and lighting to a P.A. system and speakers - so local musicians can simply "plug in and play" rather than constantly haul equipment in and out.

This weekend the Tsawwassen Legion is hosting Sound System Musicfest, a three-day fundraiser to equip what is commonly known as "The Stage."

The music starts today at 6: 30 p.m. with local blues celebrity Danny Orlando and the Blues Express.

On Saturday, Norman Laroche (better known as Stormin Norman) starts off the music from 2 to 4 p.m., followed by the oldtime tunes of Lou and His Lady from 4 to 6 p.m.

Delta 88, featuring Doucette and Boychuk, is on from 6 to 8 p.m., while South Side Vibe, a superb local band, rounds out Saturday evening.

On Sunday, local celebrities Paul Tobin and Rachael Chartoor will entertain from 4 to 6 p.m., giving way to cruiseship professional Gerry Layton, along with his talented son Trevor, from . 6 to 8 p.m.

The evening closes with a jam session featuring a lot of local talent.

Admission is by a recommended donation of $10.

"This is the culmination of our efforts to establish a location for local live music. We thank those that recognize the Tsawwassen Legion's contribution to the community and hope they will support this initiative," said Nylander.
