Minister's Minute

Invitation still stands

I wrote last month to invite you to church, any church, on Christmas Eve and to be open to what Jesus had to say to you.

Did you make it? Yes and you intend to go back! Yes, life is full. I know that reality.

I had great intentions about my column. Thought about it Sunday, deferred until Monday, held it over until Tuesday and promised to do it Wednesday. Wednesday night the editor emailed: "Just a reminder that you are up for Friday's paper." Act on your good intentions!

You went and it was not a "positive experience." Christmas Eve is an affair of state planned by amateurs under pressure. Give a regular Sunday a try. If not, like a smorgasbord, there is always another church to taste.

Even we clergy miss the mark. I met some folks on Christmas Eve and later met them in the midst of too many things happening for me. I missed the cue to further conversation. I hope I will have a second chance to connect.

If you did not go, I am reissuing the invitation. We are a year-round organization.

In John's story of Jesus, Jesus meets Phillip who gets so excited about Jesus that he finds Nathaniel and invites him. Phillip is reluctant and skeptical. Nathaniel says, "Come and see!" The invitation still stands.
