THE TIPPING POINT
Canada is soon approaching the demographic reality when old people will outnumber young people. The economic implications are usually the focus of this trend, with the attendant ominous scenarios to which the phrase "tipping point" alludes. But please consider the following from the Bible:
"Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come." (Psalm 71: 18)
The "old and gray" have an important calling, to be a voice of wisdom and hope to the next generation, speaking from their own real and personal relationship with God.
"Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained in the way of righteousness." (Proverbs 16: 31).
Old people, who have "walked their talk" in following Jesus, are a wise and grace-filled resource. They are the green renewable resource to their families, their communities of faith and to the wider community. So how can we be responsible stewards of this resource of experience, expertise and wisdom, and provide regular opportunities for younger and older people to get to know each other?
It's called community, and I believe the church can serve the wider community by being places where generations continually interact; where elders declare the power of God to the next generation. Are we ready for this?
