GUESTS OF JESUS
This week we have welcomed over 90 children to our Vacation Bible School. We consider them guests of Jesus. Other churches in our community also have summer programs for children; sports camps, music camps, drama and arts camps. These are staffed by a highly organized and well-prepared volunteer army, often with paid staff support.
The caring, the creativity, and the commitment that these teams reflect is impressive. It's one way our churches support our community - by welcoming children and their families.
Another way these day camps serve our community is by allowing younger leaders to take on responsibility with the oversight of others.
This is such a fruitful leadership experience for youth. We provide the structure, the content, the support and most importantly the opportunity for them to step up and make a contribution.
And they do! I am so proud of the leadership team, from 11-year-old assistant crew leaders to 70-year-old support staff.
This is some of what churches do best - providing opportunities for generations to connect, serve together, and to get to know each other better.
Jesus said, "Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me..." (Mark 9: 37) And I am thankful to be a small part of this good news in our community.
