The COVID-19 pandemic has been especially challenging for seniors.

As BC Seniors Week approaches, (June 6 to 12) The Waterford and The Wexford seniors' residences in Tsawwassen are celebrating seniors by offering the chance for loved ones to nominate them to win a $250 deluxe care package.

“This year, it's more important than ever to celebrate seniors — many have had a difficult year,” said Andie Bakehouse, residency coordinator for The Waterford and The Wexford. Bakehouse spends her workday connecting with seniors from around the province and hears the same message time and time again.

“They've been isolated from friends and family. They're worried about their health and safety and their loved ones as well, so we've come up with a plan to give them a pandemic pick-me-up — something to boost their spirits,” she said.

Bakehouse is working with South Delta businesses to put together 20 deluxe packages loaded with goodies like hanging baskets, chocolate, wine, gift cards, and more — each unique and each valued at $250.

“These prizes are going to be amazing, and we're excited about the opportunity to highlight our local shops and restaurants,” added Bakehouse.

BC Seniors Week is customarily a time when communities acknowledge the contributions and importance of their elders by providing opportunities to celebrate, honour, and engage them. While most seniors have their first vaccination and are beginning to see the end of this long pandemic winter, hosting parties for seniors’ week isn't an option. The Bria Communities team has come up with a way to include the whole community in celebrating seniors.

Entering the draw for these pandemic pick-me-ups is as simple as a nomination. Providing the nominee is 65 years old and lives in the South Delta neighbourhood, they can win. The entry form can be found at: BriaCommunities.ca/nominate. Members of the community are welcome to nominate anyone who qualifies — even themselves.

“On the form, we asked people to share why they think the senior they're nominating needs a care package,” adds Bakehouse. “I'm expecting to shed a few tears and get a few good laughs as we read over them. Our team will select the 20 winners, and I'll be delighted to deliver their prizes.”

The deadline for entry is noon on Thursday, June 10. The lucky winners will be informed on Friday, and their care packages will be safely delivered to them by a staff member from The Waterford or The Wexford.

Twenty lucky seniors will receive the big $250 prizes, but in this case, everyone's a winner. All nominees are invited to drive-thru The Wexford parking lot (1737 56 St.) on Friday, June 11 between 1 and 3 p.m. to get their free swag bag full of goodies. The Wexford team will also be giving out free mini-donuts and a beverage, all delivered safely through their car window.

“I think we're all just a little more sensitive to the importance of the seniors in our lives these days,” said Bakehouse. “We'll do our best to celebrate Seniors Week this year, and in 2022 when everyone vaccinated, and COVID is in the rearview mirror, we'll be able to have a big community-wide party for seniors’ week.”
