This Sunday, June 4 marks the 52nd year the Tsawwassen Shrine Club is holding its annual salmon barbecue at Harbour Park in Ladner.

“This event serves a number of purposes for our community,” said club president Hugh Johnson. “It provides an opportunity for people to become aware of our philanthropy, Shriner’s Hospitals for Children, while raising funds to support donations to causes such as purchasing equipment and mobility aids for children in the community whose families may otherwise be unable to afford the equipment, as well as funding the transportation expenses and treatment costs of patients receiving treatment at Shriner’s Hospitals for Children. All patients of Shriner’s Hospitals receive treatment regardless of the family’s ability to pay.

“It also allows everyone to enjoy a delicious meal of charcoal barbequed Pacific Wild Salmon while socializing with their neighbors, family and friends new and old.”

Johnson said not all of those who participate in the event are Shriners.

“We receive help from many community volunteers and I want to express my heartfelt thanks to all these volunteers, many who help us year after year, for their selfless assistance and dedication to our cause,” he said. “We could not put on an event of this type without them. I also want to thank Lions Gate Fisheries for sourcing our salmon again this year.”

Sunday’s barbecue runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Meals are $18 and include salmon, fries and coleslaw.
