Tsawwassen Springs golf service manager Andy Garcia presented Tsawwassen Legion president Ken Harvey a cheque for $1,510 to go towards the 2021 poppy fundraising campaign.

About 150 golfers made contributions to this year’s Tsawwassen Legion poppy fund without really even knowing it.

Each year, Tsawwassen Springs designate days where they will donate $10 of each green fee to the local poppy campaign’s fundraising efforts. This year, rounds on Nov. 10 and Remembrance Day raised $1,510.

Tsawwassen Legion president Ken Harvey dropped by the club last week to receive the donation and was grateful of the business community support, especially when the poppy campaign has been hindered by COVID-19 restrictions for the last couple of years.

“(The campaign) is spread over two weeks for us and after the first weekend we were worried. Actually, we were very concerned,” said Harvey. “As it progressed, it got a lot better and we ended up coming in about the same amount as last year, which is still about $10,000 less than 2019.”

Harvey adds the poppy donations are distributed to a variety of programs.

“Obviously, our first priority is veterans in need, closely followed by assisting those with the transition of coming out of the Armed Forces,” he said. “But there are also bursaries and contributing to others such as the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation and KinVillage.”
