Volunteers help strengthen community connections for Delta Police

Everyday connections made by volunteers also provides DPD with valuable feedback about the community’s concerns.

The Delta Police Reserve Constable program is just one of several volunteer opportunities within the police department.

Volunteers are at the forefront for many programs and services that the Delta Police Department offers in our community.

According to the department, pre-pandemic, volunteers contributed approximately 40,000 hours annually. There are more than 200 volunteers with DPD.

Volunteers serve in various capacities through the District Community Police offices, Reserve Constable Program, Police Board, Police Foundation and Pipe Band.

Last year alone, eight reserve constables were hired as regular members of the force.

On behalf of the Delta Police Department (DPD), I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all of the volunteers in our community, whether you volunteer with the DPD or elsewhere in Delta, as we celebrate Volunteer Appreciation Week,” said Chief Neil Dubord. “I want to take this opportunity to appreciate and recognize every one of DPD’s volunteers who generously dedicate countless hours of their time and talent to the DPD and our community.

“I am moved by your commitment and unwavering support for our community. Your unique contributions and expertise are invaluable in assisting the DPD to deliver excellence in policing services to our community. We follow a ‘community-first policing’ philosophy at the DPD and we could not do this without you. Thank you for all you do.”

Everyday connections made by volunteers also provides DPD with valuable feedback about the community’s concerns.

This is done in a variety of ways such as:

  • Staffing the front counters at district community police offices
  • Giving more than 1,000 hours to speed and cell watch duties to remind the public to slow down and put down their phone
  • Bringing public awareness and crime prevention tips to neighbourhoods, and spending more than 1,100 hours patrolling schools and parks
  • Assisting at traffic control locations at more than 20 community events and parades.

“Our volunteers are great ambassadors for the Delta Police Department,” added Deputy Chief Harj Sidhu. “They are vital in enhancing community safety and well-being through the many programs they deliver through our District Community Police Offices. They were greatly missed during the pandemic, and we are so glad to welcome them back and are grateful for their service in building community connections.”
