Walk helps provide essential supports

IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s returns to Delta May 29

Funds raised during the event help fund the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s online programs, education and services for people in communities across the province.

With an aging population leading to an increase in dementia, it is a challenge to find adequate supports in the community or through the health-care system to support the more than 70,000 British Columbians living with dementia.

A recent survey conducted by the Alzheimer Society of B.C. confirmed that only three in 10 people living in the province felt there were adequate community and health-care system supports for people affected by dementia.

The Alzheimer Society’s signature fundraiser, the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s, is returning to Delta after a two-year hiatus on in-person events, representing a beacon of hope after a particularly difficult time for people affected by dementia. The fundraiser enables the Alzheimer Society of B.C. to continue to provide crucial programs and services to British Columbians affected by dementia.

The walk takes place at South Delta Secondary at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 29.

While the event raises critical funds, it also creates awareness of the impact of dementia in the community.

“There is something very powerful about seeing community members join together and walk in support of people affected by dementia,” says Cathryn France, the charity’s Director of Resource Development. “The support services we are able to provide are made possible thanks to the generous support of our donors, who provide over 70 per cent of our funding.”

There are typically more than 20 events held in communities across the province as part of the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s. Each of these events is dedicated to an honouree – an individual or group affected by dementia, or who has valuably contributed to the lives of people living with the disease. This year the Delta Walk honours the Devji family, members of the community who have been affected by dementia.

For a limited time, people who fundraise can make twice the difference. Every gift made online to the Delta Walk by May 29 will be matched by its patron, the Lecky Foundation, and another generous donor, up to a total of $35,000.
