The campaign for the civic election, which is exactly a month away, officially got underway following last Friday's deadline for candidates to file nomination papers. Before voters head to the polls, candidates will talk about a range of issues, including development, taxes and transportation, among others. The Optimist asked:
KATHY VEPERTS
Port expansion and the South Fraser Perimeter Road. All of it would negatively impact our community and already has.
LARRY LAVIOLETTE
The tunnel is always a problem. It would be nice to see some sort of a plan in place to ease the pain of travelling into Vancouver.
TIM ARMSTRONG
I think the South Fraser Perimeter Road and the traffic it's going to bring and also with the development in the Tsawwassen area and how they're going to deal with that traffic load in the tunnel.
DR. JON JESSIMAN
Increasing the municipal taxes for upgrading public transportation. I realize while the mayor didn't vote for that issue, I think they ought to press, as an outlying area, to not have it fall equally on all of us.
GERRY LAYTON
My biggest issue is traffic access to Tsawwassen. And what they're planning on doing to put a new access road into Tsawwassen.
