A Tsawwassen youngster raised over $1,700 with proceeds from her own book to help kids in Africa.
Teagan Read, 8, wrote and illustrated Kya’s Treasure after being inspired by a story she saw in the Optimist about a team of locals heading to Kamuli, Uganda to help build a well and clean water system at the Good Samaritan Community Nursery and Primary School.
“I hope the kids in Kamuli will get lots of clean water and be happier and healthier,” she said Wednesday before presenting a cheque for $1,778.19 to Steve and Linda Kovacs, two members of the group heading to Africa.
Read, who enjoys drawing, painting and writing, also thanked those who supported her cause.
Kya’s Treasure tells the story of a young African girl on an extraordinary quest for a special treasure on one hot, sunny afternoon.
“I think she’s shown a lot of other young kids that one person can make a difference,” said Teagan’s mom Catherine.
The Kovacs said the donation was very generous.
“The community really rallied behind Teagan’s book. It’s a wonderful book, so beautifully illustrated,” said Linda Kovacs.
The local group of seven leaves tomorrow to go to Uganda.
